Section 14 – Salt Fog:

Salt fog testing can determine the adverse effects on equipment related to prolonged exposure to a salt atmosphere or to salt fog, experienced in normal intended operational conditions.

Adverse Effects to be Monitored:

  1. Corrosion of metals.
  2. Binding of clogging of moving parts due to salt deposits.
  3. Insulation faults.
  4. Damage or corrosion to contacts and uncoated wiring.

Note: Salt fog testing is considered a sequential test, and shall not be conducted prior to Section 13 fungus resistance testing.

 Categories of Equipment

Category S

Applies to equipment that is installed in locations that are exposed to a corrosive atmosphere based on intended normal operations.

Category T

Applies to equipment is installed in locations where it is subjected to severe salt atmospheric conditions. This includes equipment that operates or it stored in a seaboard location that is exposed to unfiltered external air.
