Industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) radio-frequency equipment – Electromagnetic disturbance characteristics – Limits and methods of measurement.

EN 55011 is based on the CENELEC CISPR 11 and and covers products and equipment not covered under specific product standards in the categories of industrial, scientific, and medical equipment in the frequency range of 0 Hz to 400 GHz and to domestic and similar equipment designed to generate and/or use locally radio-frequency energy.

EN 55011 is specific to emissions testing, both radiated and conducted, and if often referenced in specific product standards such as EN 60601-1-2 for medical products and EN 61326-1 for laboratory test and measurement equipment.

EN 55011 separates equipment into two groups:

  • EN 55011 Group 1 ISM equipment contains all ISM equipment in which there is intentionally generated and/or used conductively coupled radio-frequency energy which is necessary for the internal functioning of the equipment itself.
  • EN 55011 Group 2 ISM equipment contains all ISM equipment in which radio-frequency energy is intentionally generated and/or used in the form of electromagnetic radiation for the treatment of material, and EDM and arc welding equipment.

EN 55011 separates equipment into two classes:

  • EN 55011 Class A equipment is for equipment intended to be used in locations and applications other than domestic and those directly connected to a low voltage power supply network that supplies buildings used for domestic purposes.
  • EN 55011 Class B equipment is equipment suitable for use in domestic or residential locations and applications and in locations directly connected to a low voltage power supply network which supplies buildings used for domestic purposes.

Compliance with this harmonized standard provides manufacturers presumption of conformity with the European EMC Directive, when combined with appropriate immunity testing, and when any appropriate product safety testing under the European Low Voltage Directive and or other applicable directives for CE Marking.

Note that effective 1/1/2023, the United Kingdom will no longer accept a CE Marked product, and compliance must be referenced under the requirements for the UKCA mark.

EN 55011 is a harmonized standard. Not all products are required to do all tests.
