PRODUCT SAFETY COMPLIANCE ENGINEER

Perform functions to evaluate and test prototypes and production products according to US domestic and international product safety standards. Set up test programs, evaluate product and component documentation, collect test data and prepare engineering test reports. Evaluate, troubleshoot and consult with customers on moderate to complex design changes and make recommendations to assist customers in meeting standards and certification agency requirements. Advise and/or supervise Lab Technicians and Assistant Engineers in conducting tests and troubleshooting problems.

Under general supervision:

 
  1. Discuss objectives to be achieved with customers for the laboratory testing of prototype and production products.
  2. Assist customers in initial design stages of product to ensure compliance with standards. Work with product managers, customer engineering departments and product designers.
  3. Inspect and monitor performance of lab equipment. Research and coordinate with outside vendors on purchase, maintenance and calibration of lab equipment.
  4. Provide customer support related to product safety compliance, including:
    - Identification and use of appropriate standards.
    - Product analysis and application of standards requirements
    - Advice/consulting to correct non-compliant design features or resolve test failures
  5. Provide liaison services for customers seeking formal certification from agencies such as UL, CSA, TUV, others, including:
    a) Set up projects with the agencies.
    b) Arrange for on-site witness testing by agencies.
    c) Provide necessary technical information, handle agency correspondence and generally, manage certification effort on customer's behalf.
  6. Instruct Lab Technicians and Assistant Engineers to conduct a variety of electrical and mechanical tests on products as required, and accurately record conformance data. Monitor testing progress and results to ensure compliance with test requirements and procedures.
  7. Assign testing and other tasks in accordance with analysis of products based on the applicable standard(s), providing any necessary instructions, procedures and data sheets. When necessary, perform tests.
  8. Prepare detailed engineering test reports in appropriate format (UL, IECEE CB Scheme, CCA, etc.) and enter into computer system.
  9. Review and approve reports by other engineers.
  10. Verify calibration of test equipment.

Use a variety of laboratory test equipment such as dataloggers, power analyzers, multi-meters, oscilloscopes, force gauges and standard test stands, hand tools and personal computer.

PRODUCT SAFETY MANAGER

Perform functions to manage laboratory operations and supervise laboratory personnel. Schedule testing operations, calibration and functioning of equipment and resolve operating difficulties. Assist engineers in performing tests. Responsible for quotes to customers and acceptance of new projects.

Under direction:

  1. Develop schedule of tests and utilization of equipment and personnel. Responsible for scheduling of special projects or offsite testing at customer or other facilities.
  2. Update and review lab procedures in accordance with regulations and to maximize efficiency. Responsible for lab certification and certification maintenance.
  3. Respond to customer inquiries and requests, provide quotes for services. Coordinate activities with agencies (UL, TUV, etc.) where witness testing and certification are involved.
  4. Investigate and develop new business opportunities.
  5. Monitor and manage progress of project throughout project cycle relative to customers' needs and (where applicable) agency requirements.
  6. Requisition and ensure adequate quantities of lab supplies and consumables.
  7. Consulting: Assist customers and project engineer in design and recommend modifications of products to ensure compliance with standards.
  8. Supervise lab staff in set up of a variety of laboratory test equipment.
  9. Instruct engineers in performing evaluation and testing of products as necessary.
  10. Review all reports before sending to customers or agencies.
  11. Communicate to staff new procedures or developments relevant to departmental interests.

Responsible for the supervision of all lab staff. Recommend hire or termination, administer discipline, assign, review, check work and assist employees and eliminate ordinary operating difficulties.

Use a variety of test equipment such as analyzers, receivers, signal generators, amplifiers, multimeters, oscilloscopes, standard test stands, hand tools and personal computer.

Perform other related duties as assigned.
